The Periodic Table

Display the joys of chemistry for all to see on your Dashboard!

This was my first widget, and it's a simple periodic table where you can click on the elements to display basic information: Symbol, Name, Atomic Number, Mass, and Phase under standard conditions. Double-clicking on an element will open a link to that element's wikipedia page for additional information. Now up to version 1.5, I've added the ability to select different elemental properties, and the table will remap the colors around these property values. This allows people to observe some basic periodic trends. The user preferences are also stored now, so the widget will always restart with the user's preferred style. If you have any comments or suggestions for improvements, click here to send me email.

Here are the installation instructions as written by Apple:

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you're using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar, and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you're using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. Show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar, and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

Here it is:

The Periodic Table

(version 1.5: ~80KB)

I've also scaled up the graphics to make a larger version of the widget. This form was requested by teachers for displaying with projectors in class. Makes it much easier to see the details (and graphical imperfections) of the widget. Note that it hasn't yet been updated to the v1.5 look. You can download The Bigger Periodic Table here:

The Bigger Periodic Table

(version 1.0: ~108KB)

For those who prefer their periodic tables in German, here is a translation of version 1.4.2 courtesy of Andreas Häne:

Das Periodensystem

(version 1.4.2: ~93KB)

Note that the atomic masses are those accepted by IUPAC. The other properties were obtained primarily from wikipedia and from other web sources (such as a periodic table web resource at MIT) when the wikipedia info. was insufficient or questionable. There appear to be conflicting values for properties such as Atomic Radius, so be aware that these other properties don't have the IUPAC stamp on them.

I hope you enjoy the widget.
