Motivation

• Scientific:

• Good science is verifiable. Computations on complex systems are not verifiable in practice without open source code.

• Open code experiences rapid crossover. High crossover and mutation rates encourage discovery.

• Social:

• Science is a gift economy. Recognition of authorship should extend to scientific code.

• Economic:

• Scientific training does not always lead to academic employment. Open source code is a bridge to non-traditional careers.
