Catalyzing Open Source in Science

To encourage more scientists to make their code publicly accessible, we should assign a higher status to those who release their scientific code with open source licenses.
Since status in science correlates directly with the number of publications, authors of open source scientific code should be recognized for authorship in exactly the same way they are recognized for authorship of scientific papers.
Publishing code should be equivalent to publishing a paper!
We need better citation protocols for recognizing code authorship.
